When two artists collaborate, the trick is for each to know when to step back and let the other contribute what only he or she can. When such a creative partnership really clicks the results are truly striking and an incredible new form takes shape. So it is with the team of ceramicists Clare Potter and Christopher Spitzmiller, who have been working together for many years.

Each defers to the other when describing the process but it is obviously a natural outgrowth of their combined skills. First, Spitzmiller creates a smooth vessel on his wheel then sends the blank base to Potter’s studio. Potter takes in the shape, considering where to start. The decision can be spontaneous: “I saw that form and just immediately thought ‘anemones,’” she says of one piece. The possibilities are as varied as nature itself including auricula, sweet peas, jasmine, and clusters of berries - to list just a few.

These pieces have been featured in exhibitions and are part of important collections.
